What is the maximum boiler supply temperature?

176°F or 80°C.

What glycol mix can I use in my boiler?

Maximum antifreeze content is 50% for the Vitodens 100-W boiler (when used with DHW CombiPLUS max. content is 30%). Only use antifreeze that is specifically made for hot water heating systems. Do not use automotive silicate based antifreeze.

Please observe that an antifreeze/water mixture may require a backflow preventer within the automatic water feed and influence components such as diaphragm expansion tanks, radiation, etc.

Systems may also contain components which might be negatively affected by antifreeze. Check total system frequently when filled with antifreeze. Advise system operator/ultimate owner that the system is filled with a glycol mix. The heating contractor must provide a MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for the antifreeze used to the system operator/ultimate owner.

What size venting do I need?

All Vitodens 100 WB1B boilers come with a pre-installed coaxial vent pipe adaptor, which includes a:

  • 60 mm (2⅜ in.) flue gas connection (the inner pipe), and a
  • 100 mm (4 in.) combustion air supply connection (outer pipe).

WB1B boilers also come with two:

  • 60 mm (2⅜ in.) combustion air supply connections, for use with 2-pipe direct vent systems.

The correct vent size depends on the vent material you use, and the total length of the venting system:

Type of vent system     Vent diameter *1 Max. equivalent vent length *2
Coaxial PP(s) venting 60/100 mm (2⅜ /4 in.)   82 feet (25 m)

Rigid PP(s) venting
CPVC venting

2 inch (51 mm)

98 feet (30 m) combined *3

Flexible PP(s) venting

2 inch (51 mm)

65 feet (20 m) combined *3

Stainless steel venting

3 inch (76 mm)

164 feet (50 m) combined *3

Notes:

*1  These are minimum vent diameters. Larger diameter venting may be used, and these larger systems have longer maximum vent lengths. Please see the Vitodens venting manual for details.

*2  These are equivalent lengths – the total length of the vent system including elbows and vent termination. E.g. one 45° CPVC elbow is equivalent to 3 feet (0.91 m) of straight pipe. For details on calculating equivalent vent length, please refer to the Vitodens venting manual.

*3  The total equivalent length specified for a 2-pipe system is the total combined length of the exhaust vent and air intake pipe system.

What heating circuit pump should I use with the boiler?

Recommended heating circuit pumps with Vitodens 100-W, WB1B (without an optional CombiPLUS):

  • Grundfos 15-58 (3-speed)
  • Taco 00R
    or equivalent

Refer to the graph below for proper waterside boiler friction loss calculations.

IMPORTANT:  Pump selection must be based on accurate system flow and pressure drop calculations (including DHW sizing).

How do I select and set the correct heating curve?

Properly selecting a heating curve for your boiler is largely based on the system that the boiler is being connected to. There are many factors that influence the "curve" best suited for your system, such as the outdoor temperature for your region, the type of heat emitters being used, and indoor design temperature of the building. See Illustration 1 below for details.

Examples

1. For a location with a design day outdoor temperature of 5°F (-15°C) and a building with low temperature heat emitters requiring approx. 95°F (35°C) supply water on the design day, select curve A.

2. For a location with a design day outdoor temperature of 5°F (-15°C) and a building with high temperature heat emitters requiring approx. 170°F (77°C) supply water on the design day, select curve D

How to set the heating curve

Once the correct heating curve has been selected, use the legend in Illustration 2 to set the dial to the number that corresponds to the curve letter. E.g. in the first example, set the dial to #1 to select curve A;  and in the second example, set the dial to #4 to select curve D.

Where do I connect the room thermostat?

The dry contact connection is made in the power pump module on X4 terminals 3 and 4 (see Illustration 3 below).

Can I run my boiler using a generator?

Advances in generator technologies have made running sensitive electronics much easier than it has been in the past. When it comes to "clean" power, conventional generators use automated voltage, with a regulator controlling the voltage level and thus keeping the power more stable, or "clean". Vitodens boilers are capable of operating on clean power, however, Viessmann cannot guarantee proper boiler safety and operation when used in these types of applications.
